Handball: Rules and Key Features

Handball is a dynamic team sport in which two teams of 7 players (including a goalkeeper) compete to throw the ball into the opponent’s goal. A match consists of two 30-minute halves with a 10-minute break.

Basic Rules

1. Team Composition
• Each team consists of 6 field players and 1 goalkeeper.
• Unlimited substitutions are allowed in the designated substitution area.
• A maximum of 7 players from one team can be on the field at the same time.

2. Playing Field
• The standard field size is 40×20 meters.
• The goal measures 3×2 meters, with a 6-meter goal area where field players cannot enter.

3. Ball Possession and Movement
• A player can hold the ball for a maximum of 3 seconds without dribbling.
• A player can take up to 3 steps while holding the ball without dribbling.
• To continue movement, the player must either dribble the ball or pass it to a teammate.

4. Attack and Defense
• A goal is awarded if the ball completely crosses the goal line.
• Shots on goal are allowed from any area except the goalkeeper’s zone.
• The goalkeeper is the only player allowed to be in their area and touch the ball with their feet.

5. Fouls and Violations
• Players (except the goalkeeper) cannot kick the ball.
• Holding, pushing, or rough attacking of an opponent is prohibited.
• Penalties for fouls include:
• 7-meter penalty throw (if a player was illegally prevented from scoring).
• 2-minute suspension for serious violations.
• Disqualification (red card) for extreme misconduct or three suspensions in one game.

6. Starting and Restarting Play
• The match begins with a throw-off from the center of the field.
• After a goal, the opposing team restarts the game from the center.
• If a rule is violated, the ball is put back into play from the spot of the foul.
